I have learned that about.com offers just about every kind of written tutorial that you may need, and youtube.com offers a lot of step by step walk through as well. It is a great source to use when you might not know how to do something in Photoshop. Here area few videos and links that might help you in the future.
The first video shows the workflow in Indesign CS3. At the Student Media office we use CS4 but their are not that many differences. This video shows a lot of different things that Indesign can do, and while certain things differ in their process and ours, it is still a nice refresher.

Scavenger Hunt
I came up with a really cool idea to practice accessing and downloading different elements that go into the newspaper. The more that you practice each part of the process, the more likely things will go smoothly when the semester starts. Sometimes the websites act up which is a problem for those who want to access them. However, I think that you should be able to do this exercise just fine. Consult the wiki or the links side bar on this page for helpful links. You can post your answers in the comment box below, and then check them with the Answer sheet at the bottom. Happy hunting.

KWHL
After you have reviewed the process, I would like for you to fill out a KWHL chart to see where your strengths and weakness' are. This will help me see what you know already, and what I can help you master or learn. KWHL stands for Know/Want to Know/How we will learn it/Learned. As the student you will fill out the What you Know column and the What you Want to Know column. As the teacher I will figure out the How to learn it. At the end of training we will fill out the Learned column.
Click Here for an example of the KWHL chart I did prior to my training sections.
Click Here for a blank template to fill out yourself.

The Wiki
I have created a Wiki website of instructions on how to lay out the paper. Of course I will meet with you in person to demonstrate the information, but I would like you to be familiar with what I will be showing you. This website can be updated by future designers as changes in the printing and layout process occur. The information on the site is confidential so please send me an email at cthorp1@lsu.edu and I will send you a private invite. I will be posting another assignment soon. Once you have acess click HERE or copy and paste http://reveillelayoutdesigner.wetpaint.com/ into your browser.
SKill Assessment Survey
Applicants for Layout designer must be profecient with the computer. In addition to an Adobe Indesign Test, we would like everyone interested in the position to take the Technology Skill Assessment. This assessment is for your use. If you find yourself having a lot of 1's and 2's then this job may be a little advance for your skill set. We are not trying to discourage you, we just expect knowledge of the programs. The first time I applied at Student Media I applied to be an ad designer. I went and just bombed it completely. My Adobe Photoshop skills were just not up to par. I didn't get discouraged, I just looked for a job with a focus in Indesign, which I love. So go ahead and take the assessment.
Allow Me To Introduce Myself
Hello,
My name is Caitlin Thorpe and I am the current layout designer at The Daily Reveille. I am creating this blog to assist future layout designers at LSU, and to teach the next student, Paulina, just what she will be doing this summer. Look forward to posting more information and lessons for Paulina to practice so that LSU can once again have a top ranking student newspaper.
